Egypt's football association has delayed indefinitely the start of the domestic season because of the February stadium riots that left 74 people dead. The 2011-12 season came to an abrupt halt when supporters of Cairo club Al Ahly were killed in Port Said. Play was due to resume in September but was delayed because of protests from Al Ahly fans and victims' relatives. Now football officials have announced that security permission has not been given for the 2012-13 season to start. The stadium disaster was sparked by a pitch invasion involving thousands of Al Masry fans attacking Al Ahly players and supporters. Al Ahly fans later accused the police of not intervening because of the role played by some of the club's supporters, known as ultras, in the Cairo street protests that brought about the downfall of President Hosni Mubarak. The New York Giants crushed the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday in an ominous sign of their intentions to defend their Super Bowl title. The Giants (4-2) made light work of the 49ers (4-2), the team that beat in last year's NFC Conference final, to win 26-3, while last season's AFC champions, the New England Patriots, suffered a surprise loss to the Seattle Seahawks. The red-hot Atlanta Falcons won a thriller with the Oakland Raiders to maintain their perfect start while the Cleveland Browns finally registered their first victory of the National Football League season. The Houston Texans suffered their first defeat of the season, losing 42-24 to the resurgent Green Bay Packers, and the Baltimore Ravens survived a nail-biter with the Dallas Cowboys for their fourth successive win. There were also wins for the New York Jets, Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins all won. The Giants gave 49ers quarterback Alex Smith a torrid time, sacking him six times and making three interceptions while New York signal-caller Eli Manning threw for 193 yards and a touchdown, to Victor Cruz. New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter fractured his ankle and was ruled out of the rest of the Major League Baseball playoffs after a freak accident on Saturday. Jeter was carried off Yankee Stadium in agony when he slipped and fell while fielding a ball in his team's American League Championship opener against the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees lost the game 6-4 to trail 1-0 in the best-of-seven series but the result was overshadowed by the injury to one of the game's most accomplished and respected players. "His ankle's fractured, he's out," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters. "They (doctors) talked about a three-month recovery period. It won't jeopardise his career but he will not be playing anymore for us this year." The 38-year-old Jeter, a five-time World Series winner with the Yankees, hurt the same ankle last week but Girardi said the injuries were not related. The massive crowd at Yankee Stadium, which had been roaring with excitement when the Bombers came from 4-0 down to tie the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning, instantly knew something was wrong when Jeter dived to retrieve a ground ball at shortstop. Striker Samuel Eto'o returns to the Cameroon side as they attempt to prevent elimination from the African Nations Cup at the hands of the island archipelago of Cape Verde in the final round of qualifiers this weekend. Along with Cape Verde Islands, the Central African Republic are also on the verge of their first African Nations Cup qualification in a turn about in fortunes for two of the continent's smallest countries from virtually no international competition just over 10 years ago. Cape Verde Islands are 2-0 up against four-times winners Cameroon, who replaced their coach following their first-leg defeat. Eto'o, who had refused to play in the first match after labelling the set-up around the team amateurish, made himself available for Sunday's game following a meeting with Cameroon's prime minister. "I am convinced that together, putting aside other interests for the country, we are capable, with God's assistance, of giving Cameroon football the panache, and shine of old," Eto'o said last month. Coco Crisp banished the memories of a costly defensive error with a spectacular catch that sparked Oakland to a 2-0 victory over Detroit on Tuesday as the A's avoided being swept in their American League Division Series. Crisp, who dropped a catch in center field to gift the Tigers runs in a Game One loss, made a leaping grab at the wall to rob Prince Fielder of a second-inning home run as the Athletics cut the best-of-five series deficit to 2-1. The momentum-swinging play helped starter Brett Anderson toss six scoreless innings, striking out six batters, on his post-season debut and first outing in three weeks. "Coco robbing the homer kind of set the tone. I can't say enough about the defense," Anderson told reporters after returning from a stomach injury that had sidelined him since September 19. More»

The Houston Texans maintained their perfect start to the NFL season with a 23-17 win over the struggling New York Jets on Monday. The Texans joined the Atlanta Falcons as the only teams to win their first five games of the campaign, while handing the injury-plagued Jets their third loss of the season. The visitors scored two touchdowns, the first by tight end Owen Daniels on the opening drive of the game after a 34 yard pass from quarterback Matt Schaub, who completed 14-of-28 for 209 yards. Their other touchdown came early in the second quarter when running back Arian Foster strolled 13 yards to score. Foster rushed for 152 yards in the game, including an even 100 in the first half as the Texans threatened to run riot. The Texans scored 13 unanswered points and led 20-7 early in the second half when Shayne Graham kicked the second of his three field goals before the Jets threatened to mount a comeback. "It looks like we're a little snake-bitten with injuries but that's no excuse," Jets head coach Rex Ryan told reporters. More»

Drew Brees set an NFL touchdown record on the way to helping the New Orleans Saints record a first victory of the season with a 31-24 triumph over the visiting San Diego Chargers on Sunday. Brees connected on a 40-yard effort in the first quarter to give him 48 straight games with a touchdown pass, taking him one clear of the mark set by Johnny Unitas in 1960, before he rallied his team for an overdue victory. After establishing the new record, Brees dug New Orleans out of a 24-14 hole to help the Saints end a run of four consecutive defeats in front of a relieved home crowd that included banned head coach Sean Payton, who was allowed to attend the game. Payton has been suspended for the entire season due to his alleged involvement in the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. Brees finished with 370 yards passing and four touchdown throws, including three to Marques Colston, who added 131 yards receiving for the 1-4 Saints. San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers threw for 354 yards and two scores, but his attempt to tie the game in the final seconds stalled in New Orleans territory when he was sacked by Martez Wilson, who forced a fumble and recovered possession. Ahly, hampered by a myriad of problems both on and off the pitch, are still favourites to reach the African Champions League final for the first time since 2008 at the expense of Nigeria’s Sunshine Stars. The Egyptian heavyweights, Africa’s most successful club with six Champions League titles under their belt, face the Sunshine Stars away from home in the first leg of the competition’s semi-final, amid an unprecedented dispute between them and their die-hard supporters. The Ultras Ahlawy, an Ahly fan group that used to be acclaimed for creating a feverish atmosphere inside stadiums, hit headlines for the wrong reasons when its members stormed Ahly’s club headquarters twice during the past two months, escalating their protests against their own team for agreeing to take part in domestic games “before justice is done” in the notorious Port Said case. The group wants domestic football to be suspended until the perpetrators of Egypt’s worst-ever soccer disaster, which left over 70 fans killed in February, are convicted. Ahly players sought to ease tensions after releasing a statement praising the fans recently, but it remains to be seen whether they will regain their support in the crucial Champions League clash against debutants Sunshine Stars. Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera became the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, while the New York Yankees and Oakland Athletics claimed division titles on a wild final day to Major League Baseball's regular season. The end of MLB's 162-game, six-month marathon produced special entries into the record books, as Cabrera ended the longest Triple Crown drought ever and postseason match-ups were finally settled in the first year of the double wildcards. Cabrera left Wednesday's game in the fourth inning after going 0-for-2 at the plate and clinched the award shortly after when the Yankees pinch-hit for Curtis Granderson, who was one home run short of the Tigers slugger after he had hit two-homers in their win over the Boston Red Sox. The 29-year-old Cabrera had a .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 runs to become just the 15th player to achieve the Triple Crown and first since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967. More»
